So you have decided to take the plunge and get married!  After you settle on the date and find the perfect affordable wedding venue in NYC, you are going to want to make sure to get everything in order so that you can get the required marriage license.  We have put together a reference guide for you to help make it easy.

How

If you want to get married in New York State you MUST apply in person at any town or city clerk in the state.  NO EXCEPTIONS!  The application must be signed by both applicants in the presence of the town or city clerk.  You will be required to provide proof of age by showing:

Birth Certificate
Baptismal record
Naturalization record
Census record
And one of the following identity related documents:

Driver’s license
Passport
Employment picture ID
Immigration record
Familial Restrictions

If you are under 18 or have been previously married, there are other requirements so please contact the New York City Clerk’s Office at (212) NEW-YORK or via its website at New York City Marriage Bureau.

Terms

The marriage license is issued immediately, but the marriage ceremony can not take place until exactly 24 hours later.  It is valid for 60 calendar days.

Cost

At the time this article was written, the cost is $40.

Finalize

The certificate is automatically sent by the issuing clerk to the applicants within 15 calendar days after the completed license is returned by the officiant.  This serves as notice that a record of the marriage is on file. If you don’t receive a Certificate of Marriage Registration within four weeks of the wedding, please contact the town or city clerk who issued the license.
